Drugs May Have Played A Part In Attempted Murder-Suicide In Coloma

After a preliminary investigation of a double shooting in Coloma, that left a 46-year old man dead, police say they're dealing was an attempted Homicide/Suicide. Tuesday morning Richard Merchant was found shot dead up stairs in a residence on Leedy Street in Coloma. 44-year old Carey Burgess-Wagnon was found with a gunshot to her upper leg. She tells police Merchant attacked and attempted to strangle her, after waking her up and accusing her of having an affair. Wagnon believed the rage was fueled by Methamphetamine. During the assault Merchant allegedly fired shots towards imaginary officers. He shot Wagnon once in the hip, and tried to shoot her again, but missed. Merchant then took his own life with one shot to the head. A formal review of this case will be conducted by the Berrien County ProsecutorÂ’s Office once an autopsy is finalized.
