The Mayor of Benton Harbor supports the move to go after an emergency loan from the state to help pay off debt. Emergency Manager Tony Saunders will request the City Commission approve the $2.3-million loan on Monday. The loan would consolidate all debt, and be paid off over 15-years. Mayor James Hightower says in an email: "This type of debt management makes good business sense whether the city has an income tax or not. So as we head toward local control, Mondays vote will be a preview of the future." This will be the second time Saunders asks commissioners for approval, the first time was in November when they voted it down 5-3.
