Extensive Fire Damage At Fifth Third Ballpark In Grand Rapids

There isn't much left of a large part of Fifth Third Ballpark north of Grand Rapids. A fire started in the suite level on the first base side around 11 a.m. Friday and quickly spread. West Michigan Whitecaps managing partner Denny Baxter called the destruction significant.

Listen:

Baxter said they will rebuild, but doesn't know if the new suites will be ready by Opening Day in April.

It's not yet known how the fire started or how much it will cost to rebuild that part of the stadium. Smoke could be seen about 20 miles away, and it took firefighters several hours in harsh conditions with below-zero wind chills to get the flames under control. The stadium opened in 1994 and has been expanded several times since. No one was hurt. The Whitecaps are the Single-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and are set to host the Midwest League All-Star Game in July.
