Lake Effect Snow Advisory Issued For Berrien County

Berrien County is under a Lake Effect Snow Advisory from the National Weather Service through 7 a.m. Friday, with up to 6 more inches possible. After this storm, it's going to get very cold with highs on Monday and Tuesday struggling to get much above zero. Berrien County Road Commission managing director Louis Csokasy says salt doesn't work on the roads to melt the ice when the temps dip below about 15 to 20 degrees.

Csokasy says so far, the Berrien County Road Commission has used around 2,200 tons of salt on the roads. They budget every year for 7,000 tons, and he says while it's more than was used at this time last winter, it's about average to date. Csokasy reminds drivers to slow down when the conditions are bad and give their plows and salt trucks, along with those from MDOT, plenty of room.
