St. Joseph Expected To Take Up Life Ring Issue In 2014

The Berrien County Board of Commissioners is expected to vote on January 9th on a proposal to add life rings to the South Pier in St. Joseph at Silver Beach County Park. Commissioners, however, don't want to be doing it alone and St. Joseph City Manager Richard Lewis told his city's elected officials this week they're likely to be asked to do the same thing at Tiscornia Beach.

Berrien County had life rings on the South Pier in the 1990s, but after about a year they were pulled off due to vandalism problems. The county has been studying the issue for the past several months. At a recent county commission meeting, nearly two dozen people came forward to urge elected officials to vote that day on the proposal, saying lives can and will be saved by adding the flotation devices. Among those who spoke were two people who jumped into the St. Joseph River channel this summer to save a man who had tried to swim between the piers and was in danger of drowning.
