Berrien County Commission To Vote On Life Rings January 9

A vote is now expected on January 9th by the Berrien County Commission to add life rings to the south pier at Silver Beach County Park and to the beach itself. Commissioners voted down a proposal Thursday afternoon to add the rings because the measure didn't have enough detail. After the vote, several who voted "no" said they supported the safety initiative but disagreed with it being added to the agenda at the end of the meeting instead of first going through a committee. Nearly two dozen people surprised the county board by speaking up during public comment and urging the commission to vote. Reverend James Atterbury of Benton Harbor lost his nephew to a drowning accident in Lake Michigan in 2012.

Sarah Jollay told commissioners life rings could be an effective visual reminder that the water isn't always safe.

The life ring proposal has been discussed by the county board for several months. Berrien County had life rings on the pier roughly 20 years ago, but pulled them off due to vandalism.
