SUV Driver Survives Crash With Farm Stake Truck Carrying Tons Of Corn

A 30-year-old Baroda man is lucky to be alive after a crash between his Chevy Blazer and a stake truck. The truck was carrying 6 tons of corn when it turned onto Cleveland Avenue from Hinchman Road in Baroda at 6 p.m. yesterday. The front end of Jeremy Elliott's Chevy was destroyed, but he suffered just minor injuries. Both he and 77-year-old Fred Schmaltz, who was driving the stake truck, were treated at the scene by paremedics from Medic 1 and declined to go to the hospital. The Baroda Lake Township Police Department is still investigating the accident. Both men were wearing seat belts, and the air bags deployed in Elliott's Blazer.
