A permanent injunction banning Berrien County Sheriff's officers from using a gun range in Coloma Township for training remains in place following a hearing on the matter and a contempt of court charge on Thursday. Lawyers for the township indicated they do not wish to have any county officials arrested on the contempt charge. The issue is complicated and involves several court cases dating back a number of years. In 2008, Judge John Dewane issued an order that blocked officers from using the Coloma Rod and Gun Club for training. The county board may have forgotten about that order when they voted to approve the construction of a shed just up the road from the Coloma Rod and Gun Club for police training this fall, and the contempt of court charge stems from that. The county is now seeking to modify the 2008 order to allow the firearms training to continue past January 31, 2014.
