October's housing sales came in stronger than year-ago numbers in Berrien County along with the western portions of Van Buren and Cass counties. According to the Southwestern Michigan Association of Realtors, 315 houses were sold and closed, an increase of 15% over the same month last year. The average price also jumped by 20% from 2012 and now stands at $189,476. September and October home sales had the highest numbers of units sold since 2006, which was the peak year for the market. In October, the number of bank-owned or foreclosed homes as a part of all closed transactions matched the lowest percentage for the year at 17%, which was also recorded in June.
