Hightower Again A Recall Target

Recall petitions are being examined by the Berrien County Clerk's office targeting Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower. The "Herald Palladium" reports a clarity hearing will be held on November 6 for the Berrien County Elections Commission to review the petition language. James Cornelius filed the paperwork on Wednesday, backed by Benton Township activist Ed Pinkney's group BANCO. Pinkney issued a press release indicating the organization wants to recall Hightower because he voted against putting the city income tax proposal on the ballot, claiming the vote indicates the mayor, quote, "does not support the people who live in Benton Harbor." Hightower tells the "Herald Palladium" he's being targeted quote, "because I don't go along with the nonsense." The mayor is not supporting the idea of enacting an income tax in the city.

Benton Harbor City Commissioner Dennis Knowles attempted to recall Mayor Hightower last year, but was unable to gather enough petition signatures to put the issue on the ballot. That attempt is now being investigated for fraud. Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey has given a report to the county prosecutor's office after Hightower noticed several signatures on one petition appeared to be from the same person.
