Berrien RESA Refunding Special Education Surplus To Districts

Area school districts are getting a refund from the Berrien Regional Education Service Agency. Berrien RESA will return just over $2.5 million to the districts in reimbursement for special education over the course of the school year.

That's Berrien RESA Superintendent Kevin Ivers, who says they've been able to refund the money in all but one school year since 2004. The dollars are determined by a county-wide reimbursement formula from the special ed budget. This year's surplus comes from a pair of sources. They are Fund Equity and Act 18 dollars, which are levied through a county Special Education millage. Ivers says the money will help offset the costs incurred by districts for providing special education programs and services.
