Not responding to a jury summons can land you in jail. That's the reminder going out this week from Berrien County Trial Court Chief Judge Pro Tem John Dewane. The court has put out a press release indicating while 275 people appeared for jury duty in September, 50 did not. All of those who failed to show up have since contacted the court to reschedule. However, not doing that can lead to a conviction on contempt of court charges and the possibility of jail time and fines. The Trial Court typically calls about 15,000 people a year for jury duty, but only around 800 eventually serve on a jury.
