Activist Ed Pinkney has 60 days from now to gather the signatures of 2,005 registered voters in the Benton Harbor Area Schools District on each of three petitions to force a recall of a trio of school board members. The Berrien County Election Commission approved the petition language during a hearing on Wednesday. Pinkney wants to recall board president Martha Momany and trustees Lue Buchana and Willie Lark. The petitions state Momany didn't adhere to the Open Meetings Act by not calling for a vote to end a school board meeting. Lark and Buchana are included for not appointing a seventh member to the school board by August 31. The board deadlocked 3-3 to appoint Anna Maria Brown, with the three recall targets casting the "no" votes. Berrien RESA then stepped in to make the appointment, picking someone other than Brown. The three board members have 10 days to appeal the approvals of the recall petitions. Pinkney wants the recall before voters in February.
