Benton Township Approves Business District Tax Hike For Police Coverage

A new tax will take effect December 1 for property owners in the business district of Benton Charter Township. The township board voted 4-2 last night to enact the levy aimed at funding additional police patrols, which will be nearly 2.2 additional mills. John Kolaskey owns Carpet Mart on M-139 and spoke out against the tax both Tuesday and at a public hearing in September.

Kolaskey told the township that in the more than two decades he's been in business, he's had to call for police to come out one time. He and others who spoke last night say the problem is with the big box stores in the area, not small businesses. They add the extra tax will drive some out and prevent others from coming in. A lawyer representing several stores, including Slumberland Furniture, is planning to take the township to court over the issue.
