NRC Releases Mid-Cycle Assessments Of Nuclear Plants

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is out with its mid-cycle assessments of the nation's 102 nuclear power plants regarding first-half performance in 2013. 92 of them - including both Palisades in Covert Township and the D.C. Cook plant in Bridgman - are in the two highest performance categories. NRC spokeswoman Viktoria Mitlyng says it's an upgrade for Palisades from last year, but they're not out of the woods yet for extra inspections.

Palisades is still receiving an extra 1,000 hours of inspection from the NRC over the normal amount. The Fermi 2 nuclear plant near Detroit has also resolved its performance issues and is ranked again in the two highest performance categories. Fort Calhoun plant in Nebraska is in an extended shutdown with significant performance issues and is currently under a special NRC oversight program distinct from the normal performance levels.
