For the past month, Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety Director Roger Lange has been off the job and studying to pass the state's two fire fighter exams. He was placed on paid leave on July 19 and will take the tests on August 31. Lange had not been tested or certified for fighting fires since the city combined police and fire services in 2011 because the state regulations have some room for interpretation when it comes to public safety departments. State rules indicate if a public safety director doesn't fight fires and leaves those efforts to the fire division there's no need. But, if the director goes to fire scenes, then that person needs fire certification. Lange does show up when there's a fire in the city, prompting the need to take the tests.
