Detroit Files For Bankruptcy, Saunders Gives Differences Between It And BH

The City of Detroit, which has an emergency manager, is filing for bankruptcy. Benton Harbor, which also has an EM, is nowhere near that situation. That's according to Benton Harbor EM Tony Saunders.

Saunders says the problems in Benton Harbor have a lot more to do with the local economy, and the work-force attaining employment to contribute to the tax base. When it comes to local control, Saunders hopes to be out of the city by the end of the year. Before that happens pension reform and major debt elimination needs to take place. Detroit is the biggest U.S. city to file, the result could mean laying off municipal employees, selling off assets, raising fees and scaling back basic services.
