Benton Harbor City Income Tax Discussion Continues

While several employers are speaking out against the proposed Benton Harbor city income tax, at least one elected official says it's worth a look. Berrien County Commissioner Mamie Yarbrough says the rates they've been floated are relatively low.

So far, New Products Corporation and Thayer have both come out in opposition, which City Commissioner Trenton Bowens says isn't a surprise.

He says other communities are watching closely to see if Benton Harbor succeeds, as many local governments are fretting about the loss of the personal property tax paid by businesses. Bowens says he's hearing that other communities may move in the same direction if it works here. His next town hall meeting on the tax proposal will be Monday, July 8 at 6 p.m. at Benton Harbor City Hall.
