Berrien County Approves Moving Ahead With Life Ring Possibility

We could see a return of life rings or other life-saving devices to the South Pier at Silver Beach County Park in 2014. The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has voted to direct county staff to start studying the best path forward. Commissioner Jeanette Leahy has been among the biggest proponents of adding the rings to the pier, and says times have changed since the county last did it in 1994.

Ron Wise, the executive director of South Haven Area Emergency Services urged the board to pass the resolution and talked about their work adding life-saving devices on the piers.

The vote was unanimous, but only after the proposal was changed to add the possibility of adding life rings somewhere inside Silver Beach County Park instead of just on the pier. Some commissioners were leery of just putting them on the pier due to liability issues and the fact that piers are federal property, not county. A final vote is expected before December 1. The Cook Nuclear Power Plant is offering a $10,000 donation to fund improving safety on the pier.
