BT Prepares For The Exit Of PPT

Michigan is phasing out personal property tax for most businesses beginning in 2014. That may be good for businesses, but for municipalities such as Benton Charter Township itís going to be rough.

That's Superintendent Elden Piontek, those other losses he mentions are coming from police and fire.

On top of that taxable value of property occupied by big re≠tailers has plummeted since 2008. Home Depot's reduction was roughly 64% while Target was 55% and Lowes was about 35%. While preparing for the extra $700,000 in losses next year, Piontek says the Township may begin contracting services and maybe look to other municipalities to provide services.
