Another Cost Savings Cut in Benton Township



If you're a fire fighter or police officer in Benton Township, the opportunity to retire early with the help of military credit is no longer available. The township is halting the military credit policy to help fight troubled finances. Legislation from the 1930's allows the township, by a three-fifths vote, to grant credit for up to six years of military service. Township Supervisor Eldon Piontek says credits had been used in the past, but nowhere near the six year max.

There is no estimate on the policy's potential savings. Piontek says since it's a local decision, when the township's money situation is fixed the credits may one day return.
