Democrats are livid, but Republicans in the state House are moving higher education budget bills through committee which include an increase in funding for universities, but only if they play by certain rules. Representative Al Pscholka is sponoring the bills and says schools that enter into new long-term contracts with faculty and staff that don't include cuts or raise tuition by over three-percent will have their funding slashed.
Democrats in the Legislature say the GOP is punishing schools and unions for following the current labor laws and signing new long-term contracts before Michigan becomes a right-to-work state next week. Pscholka disagrees, saying their bills are an incentive to keep tuition and other costs in check.
