The Berrien County Road Commission board, managing director Wayne Schoonover and county highway engineer Brian Berndt are being called before the Berrien County Board of Commissioners Administration Committee this week. Sources tell WSJM News the Road Commission held a closed session Monday morning on "personnel matters," with Berndt and Schoonover. The road commission is currently under a federal investigation, as the U.S. Department of Transportation is reviewing paperwork dating to 2009 for any possible mismanagment of federal dollars under former managing director Rhonda Hildebrand. She was let go last fall after non-union employees filed grievances that led to a more than 20 page report into the doings of her and two managers. They also no longer have jobs at the road commission, and the county board fired two road commissioners. A third resigned rather than be grilled over how they handled the accusations.
