The state House has approved legislation which waives the public hearing requirement for emergency dredging and cuts the permit fee amount. Representative Al Pscholka has been instrumental in getting the legislation passed.
The House next week will take up a Senate bill which appropriates $21 million for emergency dredging statewide. Lake Michigan and Lake Huron hit all-time record low levels this winter, though the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the water levels have risen slightly since January. St. Joseph Harbor was closed this winter, and others around the state are in danger of the same fate.
