The federal government is investigating the Berrien County Road Commission for issues related to the tenure of former managing director Rhonda Hildebrand. New managing director Wayne Schoonover tells WSJM News that agents from the U.S. Department of Transportation have been at their offices this week, interviewing staff members and going through documents and records.
Hildebrand was ousted late last year after over a dozen non-union employees filed a grievance with the county alleging a hostile work environment and accusing her and other managers of financial mismanagement. Not only did Hildebrand lose her job along with two managers, but Road Commissioners Chuck Collins and Larry Merritt were removed by the Berrien County Board of Commissioners and Road Commission Chairman Louis Gibson resigned rather than be questioned by the county board.
