A webinar is set for Tuesday, March 19 by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to discuss what's called Pressurized Thermal Shock and how that relates to the Palisades nuclear power plant. NRC public affairs officer Prema Chandrathil explains.
That rapid cooling would increase the stress on the plant, resulting in challenges to its integrity. Chandrathil would not say whether or not the NRC believes the highly-technical issue is a potential problem at Palisades. The meeting is being held on a Tuesday after typical work hours as a direct result of feedback the NRC received from the public to discuss issues at a more convenient time when people may not be working. The previous webinar on through-wall leaks was held on a Saturday to allow more public participation. Details are on the NRC's website.
