Bold proposals toward city unions and continuing budget cuts is how the financial emergency in Benton Harbor is being handled. This week, EFM Tony Saunders has consolidated department operations from the Federal Building to City Hall, saying it will save the city roughly $60,000 a year. Now Saunders is trying to finish union negotiations.

Also this week, Saunders says Mayor James Hightower and Commissioner Marcus Muhammad have stepped forward to co-chair a millage renewal campaign.

The campaign will encourage citizens to renew an expired millage worth 10-mills. Saunders says he will attend a town hall meeting set for Tuesday, March 19th that will discuss the millage's importance.
