As many as 20 years in prison await Monica Smith of Benton Harbor. She pled guilty Wednesday to an arson charge for setting the fire on February 22 at River Terrace Apartments in Benton Harbor, with the fire doing over $1 million in damage. Smith started the fire after an argument with her roommate, torching her own unit and causing smoke and water damage to several others. Security camera footage showed her leaving the apartment just before smoke was seen coming out of the door. Several tennants have been forced to move to different units in the high-rise due to the damage caused by the fire. Smith will be sentenced in April.
