The man whose been trying for roughly a decade to get permission to mine gravel from his Berrien Springs property is getting a permit to do so. Phil Hecht got the OK Tuesday night from the Oronoko Township planning commission to mine from the land he owns off M-139. Commission Chairman Jeff Lemon and three others voted for the approval, a list of conditions came with the permit. Lemon says many factors went into a "yes" vote.
Those consequences would be the safety of drivers on M-139, also the health of neighbors. Past reports indicate some of Hecht's neighbors have a problem with possibility of dust debris from the mine pit. Lemon believes Hecht's plan meets the standards set by the township's zoning ordinance. Those opposing the gravel pit can appeal to Berrien County Trial Court.
