Berrien County Planning Consolidation Of Buildings

A former Honda dealership on Napier in Benton Township could soon be Berrien County property. County Administrator Bill Wolf is proposing buying 48 acres of land to consolidate five Health Department locations and have a new Animal Control facility, saying both departments are in dire need of new facilities. Wolf told the County Commission the county has the money to pay for the project in the Delinquient Tax Revolving Fund.

A vote is likely to be held next Thursday morning on approving Wolf's plan. He is calling for building a new Animal Control shelter, saying it will cost roughly the same as retrofitting an existing building to handle the needs. The new property will give Animal Control room for runaway horses, cows and other livestock along with room to safely house abused animals as they come in. The county is being offered the property for $1.9 million, which is $700,000 less than the current asking price.
