Tax revenues declining, expenditures rising and the possibility of personal property taxes being wiped aside: That's the report being given to trustees by department heads in Benton Township on the current situation they face. With state legislators voting to phase out personal property tax starting next year, an annual loss of $183,000 is expected for the township. A hefty decline of $334,000 in tax revenue is also anticipated.

Piontek says roughly $1.7-million in cuts over the next six years have already been made to get back in the black.
