Mattawan Firefighter Dies Tuesday Night

A firefighter from the Mattawan Fire Department has died while responding to a house fire in Van Buren County. Officials say that Nate Fruin died from a heart attack. He was responding to a house fire on M-43 Tuesday night. Mlive.com reports Fruin and another firefighter were on their way to bring water and refreshments to firefighters at the house when he went into cardiac arrest. Mattawan Fire Chief Terron Mclean said Fruin's death will be classified as a line-of-duty death, with full honors if that is in accordance with the family's wishes. Fuin joined the department in 2009, the year he graduated from Mattawan High School. Arrangements are pending at Betzler Life Story Funeral Home in Kalamazoo. Fuin was 22.
