New Buffalo officials say the New Buffalo Harbor will be dredged by April 30. Ryan Fellows is the assistant to the city manager and says there will be three dredging projects in New Buffalo this spring.
The third area to be dredged is the boat slips and the city's transient marina. The city has secured permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for the dredging. Emergency funding is coming from the city's Emergency Harbor Dredging Fund and grants from the Pokagon Fund. The city is still working with state officials to amend the current permit for the Launch Access Channel that only allows just under 10,000 cubic yards to be dredged each year, as the state estimates over 25,000 cubic yards of material needs to be dredged at a cost of $882,000.
