The Niles Police Department says $1,800 was taken but has not been recovered from last weeks bank robbery. One week ago 44-year-old Richard Smith of Benton Harbor allegedly told a teller he had a bomb while robbing the Chemical Bank in Niles. A suspicious bag was found in the lobby, its contents, a pair of boots - not a bomb. On Wednesday Smith was arrested by officers from the FBI, Benton Harbor Police, Berrien County Sheriff's Department, Michigan State Police and Niles Police. He was taken into custody at a home in the 100 block of Catalpa Street in Benton Harbor without incident. He is charged with bank robbery and two counts of armed robbery and faces up to life in prison.
