Lakeshore Schools are asking voters this spring to approve two bond issues totaling $53.63 million. One will fund security upgrades, classroom expansions, and badly needed technology improvements, while the other pays for a new elementary school to be built in Baroda. School board member Mike Welch said the proposals are scaled back drastically from that failed several years ago when the district asked for $103.5 million.
District officials warn in the next few years, the MEAP tests will be phased out and replaced by computer-based standardized tests which the district currenlty cannot handle with its current computer lab setup. Better security is also needed, and the proposed elementary school in Baroda is proposed for land the district already owns. Lakeshore Schools overhauled its strategic plan after the last proposal failed in response to the concerns of those who voted no. If both proposals are approved, the taxes on a home with a $180,000 taxable value will go up by less than $15 per month.
