The United Way of Southwest Michigan celebrated its most successful year ever yesterday at Shadowland on Silver Beach. President Anna Murphy popped out of the organization's 70th birthday cake with a sign that triumphantly proclaimed that the community had raised $3,281,533 in 2012 - meeting and exceeding the goal of $3.1 million. It is the single highest total ever raised in their 70 year history. “This campaign was a success for the entire community,” according to the 2012 United Way Campaign Chair Todd Gustafson of Michigan Works. “United Way was supported by 235 companies in Berrien and Cass counties through either a campaign or a corporate gift,” he explained. “The full campaign includes about 8,000 individuals who give to United Way and approximately 1,800 new donors.
