A roughly six-day outage is over at the Palisades nuclear power plant in Covert Township. The facility was returned to service early this morning and was synched to the electric grid just before 1 a.m. The plant had been shut down since just before 5 p.m. last Friday for repairs to the component cooling water heat exchanger, which required the reactors to be powered down. Crews also replaced a damaged switch in the main generator motor-operated disconnect in the plant's switchyard during the time the facility was off-line. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission sent in an expert to oversee the repairs. Palisades spokesman Mark Savage said in a statement the plant's reactor levels will be increased to full power over the next several days.
