The superintendent of Utica schools near Detroit is the highest paid K-12 administrator in the state, earning just under $301,000 a year. The Mackinac Center for Public Policy has released a searchable database comparing all of the superintendent's pay rates in the state, and spokesman Michael Van Beek said most districts have the information available, but no one had put all of it together.
Rockford Public Schools Superintendent Mike Shibler is the second-highest paid, followed by Kalamazoo Public Schools' Michael Rice. The highest paid in Berrien County is Richard Weigel of Niles, who earns about $100,000 less than Rice at just over $182,000 a year. In Van Buren County, the highest paid superintendent is Mattawan's Patrick Bird at nearly $171,000, and the highest paid in Cass County is Edwardsburg's Sherman Ostrander. He is also the highest paid administrator in our tri-county area with salary, benefits and perks combined at over $249,000. You can find the database at mackinac.org.
