"We've come a long way downtown." That's the assessment of St. Joseph City Manager Frank Walsh regarding the city's core as he spoke this morning to about two dozen people at the first of two forums on the five-year goals of the city's Downtown Development Authority. At the same time, Walsh says there are issues that need to be addressed.
The street lights date to 1977 and the city is starting to have a hard time finding parts to make necessary repairs. Along with lights, parking lots need some work, and merchants are concerned about parking. A downtown transit system was tossed into the mix this morning, with the idea of using a city lot a few blocks away from downtown for downtown workers to use and take a tram or similar mode of transportation into the city. Walsh said one main concern with that would be employees of the restaurants that work until the early morning hours during the summer and keeping them safe getting back to their vehicles at 2 or 3 a.m. Another meeting will be held tonight at 6:30 at St. Joseph City Hall.
