They intended to build the new Riverview Campus in the most environmentally-friendly way possible, and Whirlpool Corporation is being recognized for those efforts. The world's largest home appliance manufacturer is receiving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum certification for the new campus in downtown Benton Harbor. Platinum in the highest LEED recognition level, and Whirlpool says the campus was built with five key areas in mind. Those are sustainable site development; water savings; energy efficiency; materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Phase one opened last year, and the second phase of the project is underway. Whirlpool says more than 90% of the project's subcontract were awarded to Michigan companies, with the vast majority being from Southwest Michigan and 10% being local.
