The St. Joseph River is at what could be an all-time low, as is Lake Michigan. Lake Huron is also lower than ever, with Lake Superior getting close to its record. State Representative Al Pscholka says there will very likely be help on the way soon from Lansing.
Pscholka says Governor Snyder's budget is expected to include $21-million for "ports of refuge" when it's released this week. He has also introduced a bill to take tax dollars from businesses in and around harbors and earmark it specifically for dredging efforts. Pscholka says he is talking to Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette about pressuring Washington to properly spend the money in the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund, which has been raided for other purposes by the federal government.
