It's very likely the St. Joseph River has never been as low as it is now in Berrien County. County community development director Dan Fette told the St. Joseph Township board this week dredging the river so that boats can use the waterway will be very expensive - about $1.2 million and will take more than three years. Township Supervisor Tim Fenderbosch tells WSJM you can walk across parts of the river without being in water anywhere near your waist.
A proposal is being floated to charge a special assessment to the cities of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor along with St. Joseph Township to have boat slip owners pay for the dredging over the course of the next decade. Fette says that's currently estimated at $170 per year per slip owner. The proposal would have to be passed by officials in the three municipalities to go into effect.
