There is definitely some pain at the pump throughout Southwest Michigan as we head into the weekend with a massive jump in the price of gasoline. Prices stand around $3.75 a gallon right now, when two weeks ago we were paying $3.18 on average. GasBuddy.com analyst Patrick DeHaan says this is one of the rare times when other than a jump in the price of oil as the stock markets hit new highs, there's nothing that could be causing the spike.
Since January 2, the wholesale prices that gas stations pay for the fuel have risen in the Midwest from just over $2.38 a gallon to today's price of nearly $2.92. Typically, the pump price is about 80 cents higher than the costs per gallon for retailers.
