Senator Levin Calling For More Dredging Money

Michigan's senior U.S. Senator is set to reintroduce legislation aimed at improving the maintenance of harbors across the country. Senator Carl Levin's bill would make sure money from the surplus in the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund, $7 billion, is spent the right way. Chairing a hearing of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, Senator Barbara Boxer of California said the fund is continually mismanaged.

Listen:

Levin submitted testimony to the committee , saying he plans to reintroduce his legislation on Friday. In the last Congress, the Detroit Democrat had more than 30 co-sponsors from both parties to the bill, but it failed to be passed and sent to President Obama. Levin called attention to the Great Lakes in his testimony, saying we have a backlog in dredging of about 20 million cubic yards for commercial harbors, which is estimated to cost $200 million to address.
