Michigan Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer says she's not going to run for governor in 2014. In a video message on Facebook, the East Lansing lawmaker says it would take a massive effort to win the Democratic nomination and then unseat Governor Snyder, if he were to seek a second term.
Whitmer's daughters are nine and 10 years old. She has been the most vocal opponent in the Legislature of the Republican agenda. Whitmer did not rule out seeking another office, and rumors have hinted she could challenge Attorney General Bill Schuette in 2014 instead. The 41-year-old was elected to the state Senate in 2006, and took over as the Democratic leader in 2010. Prior to that, she served in the state House from 2000 to 2006.
