Joseph Harris Talks To WSJM On Way Out Of Benton Harbor

The time of Joseph Harris as Emergency Financial Manager in Benton Harbor draws to a close Thursday, as he will be replaced on February 1st by Tony Saunders. Harris spoke with WSJM's Pat Moody this morning, admitting things started off rocky between himself and elected officials in the city and never improved. He says part of that came from some commissioners being elected for the first time, only to not have any authority with the city under state control.

Listen:

Harris called the change from him to Saunders positive for the city, echoing recent comments from Mayor James Hightower that it will give the city a fresh start. The outgoing EFM talked about some success he's had from revamping City Hall to the new swimming pool at Benton Harbor High School and other city beautification projects. Harris says the "city is running well," adding he thinks Benton Harbor is about a year away from regaining local control.
