Failed Republican gubernatorial candidate and GOP power broker Dick DeVos is getting the credit from a Republican in the Michigan Senate for getting right-to-work passed in the state last month. The liberal group Progress Michigan has released audio of Senator Patrick Colbeck speaking to Tea Party activists at an Americans for Prosperity event in which the Canton lawmaker admits DeVos and former state Republican Party Chairman Ron Weiser opened their pocketbooks to convince those who were on the fence to vote for the legislation.
Democrats have contended for weeks that it was DeVos who gave the push to get the law passed, which they say will result in the power of labor unions diminishing at best and the breakdown of organized labor throughout the state as a worst-case scenario. Progress Michigan executive director Zack Pohl said in a statement that quote, "it's amazing what Republican politicians will say to Tea Party activists when they think no one is listening." DeVos is the son of Amway co-founder Richard DeVos, the husband of former Michigan Republican Party Chairwoman Betsy DeVos, and lost to Jennifer Granholm in the 2006 gubernatorial race.
