Representative Genetski Wants More Dredgiing Money



It may be the end of January, but some state lawmakers are already thinking about the summer. In particular, they're trying to come up with money to dredge harbors in the state. Representative Bob Genetski is a Saugatuck Republican and has introduced a bill to let local governments apply for grants from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund for dredging projects.

Representative Al Pscholka has also recently told WSJM News he wants to find ways to get dredging paid for. The St. Joseph Harbor is currently closed to commercial ships because Lake Michigan is too shallow at the mouth of the St. Joseph River. Coupled with the US Army Corps of Engineers not having the money allocated to dredge right now, the Great Lakes are approaching historic low levels.
