When it comes to putting a moratorium on spending, the Benton Harbor city commission is split. During Tuesday night's meeting, the commission had a split vote on a proposal that would cease spending until the new Emergency Financial Manager is in place. Commissioner Duane Seats says eight new police cars are being purchased by the city, he believes this can wait.
Commissioner Sharon Henderson says the state knows of all purchases EFM Joseph Harris makes, and the vote for a moratorium is unnecessary.
With three yes, three no, and Henderson abstaining, the motion failed to pass. Mayor James Hightower announced before adjournment that the next meeting will be Monday, February 4th in the freshly refurbished council chambers at City Hall.
