Parents are just as Responsible as Student Regarding After School Fights

Those are the words of Benton Harbor Public Safety Director Roger Lange describing the after school fighting between students from Benton Harbor High School. On Friday,a brawl involving more than 200 students broke out, and as a result, there was a larger police presence around the school yesterday. Five separate police departments had to be called in to help on Friday, and eight arrests were made. Lange and his staff are coming up with ways to alleviate this problem.

If a parent is arrested they will be charged with a misdemeanor count of parental responsibility, punishable by up to 90-days in jail. Director Lange feels positive that the problem will be handled correctly and the safety of the students will be maintained moving forward.
